I remember taking in live jazz at Club That awhile back when it was opposite Samdeok Fire Station. For years, they’ve always been lumped into the underrated ‘East of the Fire Station’ bar life that leads down the lone street to Kyungpook University Hospital, where local bar owners from That, Sokong, Wes, would collaborate to help promote their sliver of street.
Since then, ‘That’ has moved to a 4 story location, west of the station, and has tapped into the pulse of downtown. They’ve risen to enjoy much more visibility and have become a mecca for art and music enthusiasts across the city. On the first floor is their wine and book cafe, on the 2nd is their live jazz floor, on the 3rd is another popular bar area where you can either have drinks overlooking the live jazz on the floor below or get your drink on with the 3rd floor bar and its separate vibe. The 4th floor is the much more quieter art gallery and event hall, which finds itself home to many art exhibitions, including the upcoming Eternal Reflection-Daegu Art Competition And Showcase and will consist of foreigner and Korean art exhibits from May 28-31.
Club That is a perfect medley that brings the energy of Hongdae’s art and jazz scene down to the streets of Daegu. The bar’s great interior and ambience really helps elevate from being just another jazz bar and has been getting props outside of the local scene, such as getting a glowing review with ample photos in KTX’s magazine that gets stuck in every magazine holder on the back of KTX.
If you’re at any other Daegu nightspot and wondering where the hell is everybody, poke your head into one of the floors at Club That and you’ll be apt to find enough reasons to stay for awhile.
