back up은 밑에서 혹은 뒤에서 ‘받쳐 주는’ 개념이다. 실제 이러한 동작뿐 아니라, back up은 어떤 사람을 ‘지지하다’, 재정적으로 ‘지원하다’, 사실을 ‘뒷받침하다’등 보다 광범위한 의미로도 쓰일 수 있다. 예를 들어 갑작스러운 정전 등에 대비해 컴퓨터 파일 원본을 ‘받쳐 주는’ 사본을 따로 저장해 두는 것도 back up이다(back up the data).

The normally humdrum 1st floor of 남구청 (South Daegu District Office) got a facelift today, to liven up the spirits of citizens having to make the usual tedious trip their to submit or process administrative paperwork. Calligraphy students have begun an art gallery there to display their talents.

A: Can you pick up my pen from the floor? I can’t reach it.
A: 바닥에서 제 펜 좀 주워 주실래요? 손이 안 닿아서요.

B: Oh, OK, I’ll get it. It’s just under my chair.
B: 아, 알겠어요. 제가 주울게요. 제 의자 바로 밑에 있군요.

A: Let’s start the meeting. Has Mr. Lee come yet?
A: 회의를 시작합시다. 미스터 리는 아직 안 왔나요?

B: No, but he’s on his way. He went to the airport to pick Mr. Jones up.
B: 아니요, 하지만 오는 중이에요. 존스씨를 모시러 공항에 가셨어요.

pick up은 ‘들어 올리다, 집어 올리다’라는 뜻이다. 일단 동작의 방향이 아래에서 위쪽이면 pick up을 쓰기에 바닥에 떨어진 물건을 ‘줍는’ 것은 pick up이다. pick up은 또 ‘어질러진 물건들을 (집어서) 정리하다’라는 뜻도 있으며, 마중 나가 사람을 (집어서?) 차에 태워오는 것도 pick up이다. 참고로 ‘내려놓다’라고 할 때는 ‘두다’의 put과 down을 결합해 put down을 쓴다.

Time permitting, I’m going to start translating and writing about Daegu’s planned future projects. At the very least, they’ll get some coverage in our Daegu Pockets magazine.

Koreans and their love for Konglish, have always been able to work the word ‘Self’ (셀프) into their daily dosage of English-influenced Korean vocab trends. But the word doesn’t sound so hot, these days, due to the recession prompting many gas stations to cut back on staffing costs and going ‘self-service’. No more high-socked gas station doumis. /pouts

B: I know. Not one customer has shown up all day.
B: 맞아요. 하루 종일 손님이 단 한 명도 안 왔다니까요.

A: Why hasn’t Bill shown up today?
A: 오늘 빌이 왜 안 왔죠?

B: Oh, he just called and said the subway train he was on broke down.
B: 아, 방금 전화가 왔는데 빌이 탄 지하철이 고장 났대요.

show up의 up은 show의 의미를 강조하므로 show up은 ‘나타나다, 등장하다’라는 뜻이 된다. 예를 들어 Not one customer has shown up은 ‘손님이 한 명도 오지 않았다’라고 해석되고, show up을 통해 ‘손님이 코빼기도 비치지 않았다’라는 뉘앙스를 읽을 수 있다. ‘바람 맞았다’라는 말도 He/She stood me up과 더불어 He/She didn’t show up이라고도 할 수 있다.
