A: Why don’t you throw away that old watch?
A: 그 오래된 시계 좀 버리지 그러세요?

B: No way. It was a gift from my first girlfriend.
B: 안 돼요. 처음 사귄 여자 친구가 준 선물이란 말이에요.

A: Are you really going to throw away that purse? It still looks new.
A: 그 지갑 진짜 버릴 거예요? 아직 새것 같은데요.

B: Well, I’m just tired of it. You can have it if you want.
B: 뭐, 그냥 싫증이 나서요. 원하시면 드릴게요.

put away는 물건을 다른 장소로 ‘옮겨 치우는 것’인데 비해 throw away는 아예 ‘버리는’ 것이다.

put은 그냥 ‘두다’라는 뜻이지만 throw는 원래 ‘던지다, 팽개치다’라는 뜻이기 때문이다. away는 throw와 결합하여 그 의미를 강조하는 역할을 한다.

A: How about going out of town this weekend?
A: 이번 주말에 야외로 나가 보는 게 어때요?

B: I’d love to, but I can’t. My car broke down again.
B: 그러고 싶지만 안 돼요. 제 차가 또 고장 났거든요.

A: I need to print out this form, but the printer broke down this morning.
A: 이 양식을 인쇄해야 하는데 오늘 아침에 프린터가 고장 났어요.

B: Let me see…. Oh, it’s not broken, it just needs a new ink cartridge.
B: 어디 볼까요…. 아, 고장 난 것 아니에요. 그냥 잉크 카트리지만 갈면 돼요.

자동차(car)나 자판기(vending machine), 프린터(printer), 컴퓨터 등 기계류가 부서지거나 고장 나는 것이 break down이다. 약해지는 down의 의미가 break와 더해져 ‘고장 나다, 작동이 되지 않는다’는 의미를 완성하고 있다.

A: How was Florida? I heard there was a terrible hurricane.
A: 플로리다 어땠어요? 허리케인이 심했다고 들었는데요.

B: Yes, all the flights were canceled and my vacation plans got all messed up.
B: 예, 비행편은 전부 취소되고 제 휴가 계획이 모두 엉망이 됐어요.

mess up은 ‘엉망으로 만들다, 망치다’라는 뜻이다. 방을 어지르거나(mess up the room), 머리 모양이 망가지는(my hair’s messed up) 것 외에도, 계획이나 일정이 생각대로 풀리지 않아 엉망이 되었다고(the plans were messed up) 할 때도 mess up을 쓴다.

Susan: I’m not sure yet. Sooner or later someone will let the cat out of the bag. A promotion in this company is a big deal and no one can keep that a secret!
Susan: 아직 잘 모르겠어. 조만간 누군가 비밀을 폭로하겠지. 이 회사에서 승진은 큰일이라 비밀이 될 수 없어!

Mr Park: I agree! There are so many rumors going around that Mr. Kim will be promoted. I hope the big news will be revealed soon!

Ethan : Sure- it’s a huge red building- you can’t miss it!
