make ends meet이 “수입과 지출을 같게 맞추다”란 말이 된 것은 장부의 좌, 우변의 합계가 같아지는 것으로부터 나왔다.

what is that은 말하려다 단어가 얼핏 떠오르지 않아 하는 “그 뭐냐” 정도의 뜻.

jolly는 사람의 경우 모습과 행동이 즐겁고 유쾌한 걸 가리킨다.

여기서 home은 집이 아니고 고향.

적극적인 태도를 나타내는 우리말 부사 표현 ‘기꺼이’는 해당하는 영어 부사 표현은 찾기가 힘들다. 이때는 차라리 동사 표현인 be willing to…를 활용하면 ‘기꺼이 ∼하겠다’라는 의미를 전달할 수 있다. 우리말 부사의 뜻 그대로 적극적 의지가 반영된 표현이므로 특히 다른 이를 돕는 일이나 남들이 꺼리는 일에 나설 때 I’m willing to…를 쓰면 좋다.
