
Daegu mothers endure the heat to pray to the Gatbawi Buddha for their child’s success on the upcoming 수능 test, Korea’s equivalent to the SAT, which is hands-down the most critical test in Korea which virtually sets the tone for not just which school the student is able to attend, but how that school will define their social status, peer groups, marriageability, etc…There’s a Korean folk tale that says that the buddha atop Gatbawi will grant one wish per person, hence why tens of thousands of concerned mothers make this trek every year.
