Korea’s internet world has loads of online cafes where people can meet and discuss mutual interests. Not unlike the discussion forum world of Western internet culture. But one troubling kind of cafe of late, are ‘suicide cafes’. These are meeting places where depressed Koreans who may want to end it all, seek companionship for getting through their hard times, but sometimes the cafe is used to meet up with other suicide-prone members, to pray and take their lives together. On Friday, May 9, police were called to an apartment in downtown Daegu, to find the dead body of a 25-year old woman, while her companion survived and subsequently alerted the police. The 2 individuals had apparently met online at a suicide cafe.
