도라지생채 (doraji-saengchae) is one of those Korean banchan that you see but have no idea what the hell it is. It actually consists of fresh bellflower roots shredded into small pieces, then seasoned with red chili pepper powder, vinegar, salt, and sugar.

Students at Bisan Elementary School in west Daegu rush under their desks at the sound of wailing alarms. In the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes in China, Korean schools all over the country hastily conducted fire alarm drills this past week to appease concerned mothers and media ensure that response times to emergencies are up-to-speed.

글에서 잘되고 못된 것은 내게 달렸고 시비하고 칭찬하는 것은 남에게 있다. Whether writing be good or bad, that depends on the writer, but whether it should be praised, that’s up to others.

This proverb from North Korea reminds the listener that the quality of writing depends wholly on the skill of the writer, while the criticism of that piece of writing should be left up to other people. It instructs us to concentrate on putting all our effort into the writing itself, or any other task, while advising against any boasting of how well (one thinks) it was done.

Cheonghak-dong Village in the shadow of Jirisan is a place not to be missed, if you are ever venturing to the famous southern peak in the country. Home to 200 residents who still go about their day in traditional clothing, there are loads of photo ops here, not to mention some old school minbaks for you to sleep in, but not before getting dizzy on makgeolli.

Netizens are hot on this story, which is bringing back memories of the infamous ‘dog poop girl‘ scandal. Near a university in Daegu, bystanders waiting at a bus stop noticed a truck driving past with a dog tied to the rear bumper and dragging along on the road behind it. The shocked onlookers called the local animal protection agency and they intervened shortly thereafter. The driver claimed that he had no idea that the dog was tied to the bumper and then (ahem) ‘threw his wife under the bus’ by accusing her for being the one that must have tied the poor pooch to the truck.

No word on whether his blaring trot music contributed to him not being able to hear all the barking.

Edit: The article doesn’t make mention of which university this happened near, but just references that it happened outside of the east gate of ‘K university’. Korean media usually abbreviates down to anonymity to protect the names of people, but given the amount of netizen attention, they likely are obscuring the location to prevent people from going there and waiting all day to see if the pictured truck drives past, where they would chase it or something. Anyways, as most universities around Daegu are in Gyeongsan and not necessarily in Daegu, per se, the only notable K university with an east gate that has a bus stop right there, would be Keimyung.

The insanely popular Korean singer, Park Hyo Shin, is being insanely swooned over due to his song ‘화신’ that is the theme song for the insanely popular Iljimae, starring the insanely androgynous popular Lee Joon Ki.

Pretty much any mention of the above TV series, singer, or lead actor will be enough to trigger spirited discussion with your students (or yawns from the boys in class, but what else is new).

The once-popular TV show Coffee Prince may have been off the air for awhile, but thats not to suggest that it doesn’t have any plagiarism potential for a spin-off business. Coffee Prince Korea is the latest coffee franchise of the moment that is opening up everywhere, and has just opened up in Dongseongno at the former Kyochon Festival location.

A teenager jumps the turnstiles at Banwoldang Station, a scene that is becoming more and more common, as many young Koreans are progressively developing a disregard for the lack of motivation of the subway attendants at stations.

Daegu has various churches that offer English-speaking mass and services, but few are more notable for their community outreach and volunteering spirit than Namsan Church, which tends to attract Daegu-ites from all backgrounds ranging from Koreans to migrant factory workers from SE Asian countries to English teachers. A great way to get involved with the local Daegu community, make friends, while helping those in need.
